Vocal Cord

What are the vocal cord diseases?

There are many different vocal cord diseases.

The most common vocal cord disease is nodules or polyps. Nodules, which are usually benign and remain in the area where they do not spread, cause different symptoms by causing the vocal cords to not close properly. They cause short but repetitive hoarseness. In this situation, which also causes a decrease in the quality of the voice, a doctor should be consulted quickly and a diagnosis should be made and treatment should be started. Voice therapy is recommended along with medical treatment for vocal cord nodule. In the treatment of polyp, vocal cord surgeries are performed with microscopic surgery method.

Cysts are another vocal cord disease. They occur as a result of clogging of the moisturizing glands in the area where the vocal cords are located. From time to time, intense and bad use of sound can also trigger this disease. The treatment is done by microscopic surgery.

Reinke’s edema occurs in the reinke area, which forms the middle part of the vocal cords. The substances accumulating in this area cause payment over time. It is usually seen in individuals who smoke a lot. Edema occurs as a result of the accumulation of harmful substances in the reinke region (middle region). It is treated with microscopic surgery.

Vocal cord paralysis occurs when the nerves going to the vocal cords start to work poorly. Difficulty in breathing is among the main symptoms of vocal cord paralysis. It can often be seen in people who have the flu or upper respiratory tract infection. In the treatment process, sound therapy and surgical procedure are required.

Discoloration of the vocal cords is usually seen in individuals who smoke a lot. Color change is the name given to the lesions that occur in the vocal cords. Since it can cause serious problems, surgical procedure must be performed and it must be kept under the control of a doctor. Lesions may be a sign of cancer

How is vocal cord surgery done?

Vocal cord diseases may manifest with symptoms such as long-term hoarseness, dryness of the throat, swelling, change in voice tone, difficulty in swallowing or breathing. If these symptoms persist for a long time, a doctor should be consulted immediately. Early diagnosis is very important in vocal cord disorders as in many diseases. There is a risk of cancer in cases that are not treated in time.

Vocal cord surgeries are performed with the microscopic surgery method. With the surgical method, the vocal cord area is entered and if there is a cyst or polyp, it is removed. Hoarseness after surgery is a normal condition. After the surgery, voice rest is done, excessive hot or cold drinks and food should not be consumed. The recurrence rate of a cyst that has been removed is very low, so the risk of surgery is minimized. After the surgery, it is necessary not to talk for a week in order for the vocal cords to heal. Thus, the vocal cords can easily survive the healing process by staying away from air contact and vibration.
